Could you try picking up a new source package,
  ftp://geom.umn.edu/priv/slevy/geomview-161p9-src.tar.gz

to replace the one you've got?  I've addressed many, probably all,
of the problems you're finding since the last full release.  The above
is sort of a pre-release of 1.6.2, but it's enough better than the
preceding that I've also just installed it as the current geomview source
package in our main directory.  So re-acquiring the same package you
fetched before will give the same result.

The above compiles nicely on an x86 Red Hat 5.1 system (which uses glibc).
