It do seems to compile, I could run "${GEOM}/src/bin/geomview/x11/geomview".

I have some comments and questions.
First the comments:

1) I needed	MKFILEDIR = ${GEOM}/makefiles
   NOT		MKFILEDIR = .
   in "./makefiles/Makedefs.global" contrary to the INSTALL file.

2) The DEC flex don't know the "-o" flag:
	flex -olex.yy.c ../lexical.l
	flex: unknown flag 'o'
   As lex.yy.c is default output, the line should be:
	flex ../lexical.l
   (in ${GEOM}/src/lib/fexpr/Makefile.obj)

Next the question:

Can I make a "binary distribution" with two copies of gvx (gvx and gvx.OGL) as 
yours "geomview-1.6.1-alpha.tar.gz", so I can keep the sources out of the 
instalation directory. (and how do I do it)
