Actually, the same problem occurs any time I try to use a handle in  
multiple places with different appearances.  For example, even with  
separate OOGL objects:

(geometry "A" { = INST
  unit { appearance { material { diffuse 0 0 1 } } { : cylinder } }
  transforms { = TLIST ....... }
})
(geometry "B" { = INST
  unit { appearance { material { diffuse 0 1 0 } } { : cylinder } }
  transforms { = TLIST ....... }
})
