An alternative: make the gv script sensitive to an environment variable,
so you could say
setenv GVX gvx.0206
The script could just change from
gvx=/u/gcg/ngrap/bin/sgi/gvx
to
gvx=${GVX:-/u/gcg/ngrap/bin/sgi/gvx}
